He was preceded in death by an infant sister, Artie Lee in 1946; and by his mother, Ruth Caviness in 1993. Tom was a native of Belen, NM, attending college at both New Mexico State University and the University of New Mexico. He started as a pre-med major, switching to a music major, which had been his lifelong love.

Music had been a part of Tom's life since he began taking piano lessons at the age of five. By the time he was fourteen he was the organist for his family church in Belen. Tom continued with his music career playing both organ and piano. Most recently he had been the organist and choir director at the First United Methodist Church in Belen and organist at the First Church of Christ, Scientist in Albuquerque. Outside church, Tom played piano at a variety of places including Shakey's, Ivory Chopsticks and the Golden West Saloon, specializing in oldies from 1900 the 1950's and Joplin style ragtime.

Tom was predeceased by his mother, Lilly Mildred "Puds" Doty and is survived by his father, Oscar Kenneth "Bill" Doty of Belen; wife Karen Brooks Doty of Albuquerque; aunts and uncles, Loneta Zinn of Fort Worth, TX, Lois and "Nick" Nichols of Belen, Joyce and A.D. Correll of Belen and Lena Davis of Kansas. Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 27, at the First United Methodist Church in Belen at the corner of Third and Reinken.
